The National Conference on Air Pollution and Climate Change on the 31st of January saw stakeholders from academics, to civil society organizations, government officials and concerned citizens gather together to understand the perils of these two deeply intricate killers, and analyse those policies needed to mitigate our descent into climate crisis. As per a Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health study, #ClimateChange & the reduction in pollinators is causing a 3 to 5% loss in the production of healthy foods like fruits, vegetables & nuts. This reduced supply is leading to 1% of all deaths worldwide.
According to a study led by Sal Keith and Lancaster University, coral bleaching is causing behaviour changes in fishes that feed on it. These fishes are at a risk of starvation & they also make poorer fight or flight decisions risking their very survival.
A recent study Science Magazine has found that termites decompose wood at a much higher rate in warmer conditions. For every 10 degrees Celsius increase in temperature, their decomposition activity goes up by almost seven times.
Climate change is creating havoc in the lives of millions of people worldwide. Mitigating and adapting to climate change with rapid and unprecedented measures at the systemic level is of utmost importance if we plan to leave a liveable planet for future generations.
COP27 was a much-awaited climate summit as vulnerable developing countries and low-and middle-income countries were expecting definitive action to be taken in light of the growing visible impacts of climate change. Up until this year, COPs had a reputation of unkept promises and ambitions. But after the devastating impacts of climate change in the form of extreme weather events, the planet was awaiting real action by world leaders.
